Open Letter to Hakeem Jeffries

Honorable Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader

Honored Sir,

Thank you for all your efforts to provide sound leadership at this challenging time.

May I bring to your attention a wonderful speech on YouTube by David Brooks? In “How the elite rigged society (and why it is falling apart),” his insights are brilliant! He has hope for us to come back (to our principles and deepest values). He says we can either become broken or broken open. He talked to the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship, headquartered in London. Wikipedia says:

The Alliance for Responsible Citizenship is an international organisation whose aim is to unite conservative voices and propose policy based on traditional Western values. It is associated with psychologist and political commentator Jordan Peterson.

He lists the many times in our US history we ruptured, repaired, and grew. He has a very spiritual perspective. I LOVE his last words: “We’re called upon to see each other in the fullest, deepest, and most respectful way, that God imagined they would be seen.”

He also understands the deep need for community that people have now. Though he has differences with MAGA, he knows that it provides a community for people who need it. Our task, as he said, requires a shifting of the heart. We must ask ourselves, can we create a community big enough to sincerely include conservatives, centrists and liberals? Please ask this question to the caucus. Also please ask, can we invite David Brooks into our community?

David’s insight was that the conservative movement doesn’t have a positive goal. It only wants to work against the left and left institutions. As you can see, that has disastrous consequences. This is our opportunity to do true inclusion, with heart rather than legislation. And our leaders need to dig deeper to see how God wants us to do that. We must have a moral compass.

By legislating DEI, we have created tremendous resentment and even hatred. This is the opposite of what we wanted. Bari Weiss has an excellent talk on YouTube called “Why DEI must end for good.” Please listen to it. It helped me finally understand the glee of the right in smashing DEI programs. And Bari is fundamentally a liberal.

With a spirit of friendship and kindest respect,

Mrs. Dana Elken Terrell, LCSW, AC       danaterrell.lcsw@gmail.com   619 322-3666 cell
