Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is widely talked about since the Boston Marathon Bombing and the freeing of the young women who were abducted 10 years ago in Cleveland, Ohio. It is the “locking in” of memories, emotions, physical sensations — of stress. Sufferers feel like their minds are out of control — like their life is out of control. They even feel a little crazy.
They are not crazy. They simply have PTSD. The good news is that there is good treatment available. PTSD can be resolved. The human brain can be calmed, and people can get their personalities and their talents back.
EMDR is one of the two most recommended and researched treatments for PTSD. The other is CBT. EMDR therapists may be biased, but it is truly based on solid, comparison research. That has shown that EMDR works in 1/3 to 1/2 the time of CBT, requiring far less homework, which may be the reason that EMDR has a far lower drop-out rate. Also, EMDR results in more “Post-traumatic Growth” than CBT. This is why I am biased, and strongly recommend EMDR with a Certified EMDR therapist.
