“I set out to become an expert in the treatment of trauma.”

Specialties:

EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist

I was Level I and Level II trained in 2000 and 2001 respectively. I felt “on fire” about using EMDR as a treatment modality.I committed to exploring how to apply EMDR Therapy with many of my clients. At that time we were not required to receive consultation. But I knew I needed it to become competent with EMDR.  I was in a consultation group in Boulder, and sought phone consultation as well, receiving many hours of case conceptualization and skills assistance.

I trained and facilitated trainings with Laurel Parnell from 2003-2007. I found this period most helpful in developing the use of protocol modifications, thus increasing my confidence and competence in serving the needs of a wide variety of clients.  During this period I became Certified in EMDR Therapy and began the path to becoming an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, helping other therapists to become Certified.

It was in 2007 and 2008 that I began to see clients that would later be identified as having complex trauma histories, which included early childhood trauma, attachment disruption, and dissociation with fractured ego states.  I continued to seek EMDR professional development and consultation with respected Consultants such as Jim Knipe, Kathy Steele, and Roger Solomon.  As well, became an EMDRIA Approved Consultant.

Return to Graduate School; Earned Doctorate in 2013

With a desire to teach and further investigate trauma, treatments and the use of EMDR Therapy, I returned to graduate school in 2009. In my doctoral program, Counselor Education and Supervision (CES), I have taken course work and completed an internship that includes teaching, supervision, consultation and research. My dissertation is a quantitative study comparing the three treatments (including EMDR Therapy) now being used at this VA center, measuring outcomes on a PTSD symptom scale and dissociation scale in combat personnel. I have set out  to become an expert in the treatment of trauma.

EMDRIA Approved Consultant

Currently I am the EMDR Consultant at the Denver VA, consulting there since 2010, getting clinicians certified and additional clinicians trained. The clinicians there see complex trauma, with diagnoses of Complex PTSD, DDNOS and DESNOS.

I am also currently on faculty at Argosy University, Denver, teaching a variety of courses, including “Trauma Treatment in Counseling.” As well, I speak to other clinicians, a variety of health care professionals and the public about the impact of trauma, PTSD and the use of EMDR therapy.

Consultee Testimonials:

“I have had the good fortune to be able to utilize the knowledge, skills and wisdom of Marsha Sage toward furthering my own EMDR practice. I have found Ms. Sage’s ability to weave case conceptualization into her extensive knowledge of EMDR and trauma to be extremely helpful. Consultation with her always leaves me feeling excited about the possibilities of EMDR and clearer about the treatment goals for the veterans with whom I work. She is immensely supportive, compassionate and encouraging — qualities that further enhance our consultative relationship, and in turn, enhance my clinical practice.”     C.M., Mental Health Therapist, Denver VA Medical Center

“I have had the good fortune to have Marsha Sage as my consultant. Without her expertise, I’m not sure I would have achieved the next step of certification. Her support has been wonderful! I wholeheartedly recommend EMDR! I have witnessed how clients with severe PTSD can recover and lead satisfying lives.”     L.N., Mental Health Therapist, Denver VA Medical Center

“I find consultation with Marsha Sage supportive and growth enhancing. She is very generous and understands the development stage you are in learning EMDR. She targets feedback to where you are in practicing EMDR. She is gentle yet takes you out of your fear and into your next stage of developing these marvelous skills.”       K.V., Mental Health Therapist, Denver VA Medical Center

Private Practice

I now have a half-time private practice where I work mainly with adults with Complex PTSD, and many with dissociative symptoms. I see individuals and couples suffering from anxiety, depression, addictions, relationship problems and dissociative symptoms.  Their difficult experiences include:

  • victims of crimes
  • sexual abuse
  • childhood abuse
  • relationship issues
  • performance difficulties
  • domestic violence

I treat from a trauma-informed approach.  This means I consider what happened, at what age, and the impact on the client’s current situation, disorder or dysfunction.

I work with a large number of military personnel, with a variety of diagnoses, including PTSD, Complex PTSD, and co-occuring issues such as depression, addictions and relationship issues.

Work with other Clinicians

I have quite a few therapists/clinicians and other health care professionals as clients in my practice.  Often they are troubled by vicarious trauma, or their past trauma is triggered by something in the present. In addition, I do adjunctive work with the clients of other mental health professionals who are not trained in EMDR, so their trauma can be addressed.

I supervise unlicensed psychotherapists, many who are looking to become trained in EMDR Therapy in Boulder. And I facilitate a couple of EMDR Consultation Groups. I offer consultation to clinicians at all levels of EMDR development:  ten hours for basic training, certification consultation and consultation toward becoming an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant.  I am happy to do this in person or through phone consultation.

I look forward to hearing from you and learning how I can help you reach your goals for healing or for professional development.
