Extensive Experience with a Wide Variety of Issues
Licensed in CA since 1982, I have been in the field since the early 1970’s. I worked originally with trauma and with abuse survivors of all ages, ran several treatment programs for abuse recovery and taught workshops on the topic in many settings. My exposure to this led me to develop extensive experience in private practice with a wide variety of related issues: depression, anxiety, PTSD in general, codependency, dissociation, adult children of alcoholics, self esteem/self empowerment issues, and clients in recovery.
A year after the ceasefire there, I was invited to Bosnia to work with women and children war survivors. I spent a month in a newly recovering war zone, and then returned again four years later to visit the families we had befriended. This powerful and potent life experience exposed me to the aftermath of war as well as the reality of what connects us all as humans.
In addition to being a therapist, I am also a trained visual artist, a writer and poet, and, since 2004, a documentary filmmaker (currently working on a feature length film about the personal experience of war as seen through the eyes of four generations of American combatants —WWII to the present). My exposure for over a decade now, to scores and scores of veterans has once again enlarged my world view, and impacted me deeply as a person.
Being an artist and a creative person myself, I am also very aware of the challenges and gifts of being creative in this culture, which also led me to work more frequently with fellow artists in therapy.
I have been using EMDR therapy with clients since the early 1990’s and this modality, combined with my past experience with clinical hypnosis, offered me more opportunities to grow as a therapist, both in my skills and in my exposure to new situations and clients (recent traumas and PTSD especially). EMDR therapy is a potent tool for reweaving the self in a better way, and it has been an honor to watch people find their way to that end.
I have always believed that we have the capacity to heal, to transform and empower ourselves, no matter what obstacles we face. It isn’t about the obstacle we have to deal with, it’s about what we do with what happens to us, that matters.
